Caring Response Madagascar has raised money for the construction of pit
latrines at the homes of Toamasina's poor. The components for the latrines - such as these cement rings - are constructed
locally. And installed by local residents as well. Families build their own outhouses and pay part of the cost
of the latrine.
In Ambodisaina, local officials proudly announced recently that theirs was
the first village in Madagascar in which every family now has its own pit latrine. This is a result of funding obtained by
Caring Response Madagascar.
There is a waiting list of 2000 families, all hoping to have a pit latrine
at their home someday soon.
Last year, a sanitation technology engineer was brought in to develop new technologies for the
creation of sanition facilities. Plans include the development of latrines, septic systems, pollution free cook ovens
and ceramic water filters, all of which can be produced locally. Brother Edwin Joseph and the engineer presented the
SANITEC projecct to the World Bank Development Marketplace this past May.
